Bir Lehlou (liberated territories), Feb 9, 2013 (SPS) - The President of the Republic and Secretary General of the POLISARIO Front Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz has issued a presidential decree which provides for the establishment of the first Saharawi University in the liberated town of Tifariti, in the aim to meet requirements of the current stage and a culmination of the development of Saharawi educational system.
The presidential decree No. 24/2012, which issued on 23 December 2012, came after a meeting held last week at the Presidency of the Republic, attended by the Minister of Education, central directors at the Ministry and a number of dignitaries in the state.
The decree provides for the establishment of the first Saharawi University bearing the name “University of Tifariti” and appointment of Mr. Khatari Ahmudi Abdallahi as its president.
Speaking to SPS, President of the University said that the project came after strenuous efforts made by the Saharawi bodies and institutions, and a culmination of struggle of Saharawi educational family since 1976.
He revealed that there is a working committee at the level of Education Ministry implement the decree and put it into effect, a work, he said, requires cooperation and coordination with the friendly and brotherly universities especially in Algeria and Spain.
“The first step is to set up institutes as a nucleus responds to the current requirements of the Saharawi people, particularly the fields of preserving the Saharawi historic memory, literature, education, health and administration,” he added.
Mr. Khatari confirmed that they will primarily coordinate with foreign cooperators regarding the aspects of facilities, structures and educational programs, especially upgrading the secondary education and institutes as an infrastructure to build Saharawi University, recalling to the cooperation already exist with some Spanish and Algerian universities.
