Polisario Front calls on EU to break off talks with Morocco on fisheries agreement

Brussels (Belgium) Feb27,2013(SPS) - Polisario Front Representative in Europe Mohamed Sidati called on European Commissioner Maria Damanaki to “break off” the negotiations with Morocco on the new fisheries agreement because of the violation of Sahrawi rights committed by Morocco.

“There is no another alternative for the European Union (EU) but to break off its talks with Morocco on the new fisheries agreement,” said the Sahrawi Minister whose statements coincide with the harsh sentences pronounced by a Moroccan military court against Gdeim Izik’s prisoners.

The Minister underlined the non-respect of human rights by Morocco when it concerns the Sahrawi citizens in the occupied territories, a behavior in violation of the partnership agreement signed by Morocco and the EU, and which come into force in 2000, particularly in its article 2 which insists on “the respect of democratic principles and the fundamental human rights laid down in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

"The European Union, which is considered as a fervent defender of human rights, cannot accept such an attack on its reputation and credibility by ignoring the violations of human rights which are perpetrated by the Moroccan forces in the occupied territories of Western Sahara,” the minister added.(SPS)
