Eurodeputies in Western Sahara to inquire about human rights situation

London, June 24, 2013 (SPS) - A delegation of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats at the European Parliament is in Western Sahara to inquire about the situation of human rights in the occupied territories, the representative of the Polisario Front to the United Kingdom, Mr. Limam Mohamed Ali, said Sunday.


The delegation has met in the occupied city of El Aaiun, capital of Western Sahara, with members of the executive board of the Saharawi human rights group CODESA, who expressed the need for a quick solution to Western Sahara conflict, through a referendum on self-determination respecting the will of Saharawi people.


“The meeting, lasting more than two hours, allowed the European MPs to get information about the deplorable situation of human rights in the occupied territories,” Limam told Algerian press service (APS).


The visit of the European deputies to the occupied territories of Western Sahara is mainly meant to check the systematic violations of Saharawi people’s basic rights in the territories, as many reports have denounced recently human rights abuses in Western Sahara, the diplomat underlined.


The reports have been issued by several NGOs, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, in addition to the United Nations special rapporteur on torture. (SPS)
