Moscow, June 26, 2013 (SPS) - The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, Mourad Medelci, said Tuesday in Moscow that Russia and Algeria are committed to international law and respect for human rights in Western Sahara.
In a press conference at the end of his talks with his Russian counterpart, Mourad Medelci said that the meeting focused in particular on the Western Sahara conflict, highlighting the similarity of the views of both countries.
On his part, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergeui Lavrov called for the respect of human rights in Western Sahara.
"human rights must be respected in Western Sahara. This was reflected in the resolution adopted last April by the Security Council of the United Nations," said Lavrov.
In this regard, he stressed that "the position of Algeria and Russia are converged", adding that "these positions are not accidental, stemming from the belief of having to solve international problems in international equality".
According to Lavrov, the solution to the Western Sahara issue "should be made on the basis of the resolutions of the Security Council of the UN," adding that Russia declared "consistently in favor".
Lavrov said that Russia is in favor of "the continuation of direct talks between Morocco and the Polisario Front, in order to achieve the initial goal to promote the conditions on the basis of the right to self-determination of the people of Western Sahara, as resolutions of the Security Council of the UN states"(SPS)
