ALGIERS, December 15, 2013 (SPS) —The resistance of Sahrawi to occupation and oppression is a legitimate right and a sacred duty recognized by the United Nations, said Saturday in Algiers President of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) Mohamed Abdelaziz.

"People’s resistance to colonialism, occupation and oppression is and will remain a legitimate right and a sacred duty. The United Nations has recognized the right of Sahrawi people to defend themselves and resist to colonizing forces, including through armed struggle, until the achievement of self-determination and independence," the Sahrawi president said at the opening of the 4th International Conference on People’s Right To Resistance: Case of Sahrawi People."

"The heroic struggle for over 40 years under the leadership of Polisario Front has clearly showed that the peoples’ will is unshakeable and can not be undermined because it is a popular choice that stems from the deep belief of Sahrawis, who are keen to create their independent State, SADR, on all their national territory," he added.

Underlining the experience of Sahrawi people in laying the foundations of an independent State amid a fierce Liberation War, the Sahrawi president, said that "Sahrawis have chosen to build a modern and open society committed to its rights, convinced of the values of democracy, respect for freedoms, equality and coexistence between cultures and which allow women and youth to have the place they deserve in the society."
