Bir Lahlou (Liberated Territories) January 12, 2014 (SPS) - Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, President of the Republic, Secretary-General of Frente POLISARIO, renewed call for the United Nations for the protection of the defenseless Sahrawi citizens in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, in a letter Saturday to the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon.
President Mohamed Abdelaziz emphasized "in front of ongoing brutal repression and abuse reflected by the large number of victims in a unique peaceful demonstration, we call upon you to take urgent and adequate action to protect the defenseless Sahrawi citizens through the creation of a mechanism to enable the MINURSO mission to protect, monitor and report on human rights."
He indicated that masses of Moroccan forces, dressed in civilian and military, attacked Saturday a group of Sahrawi citizens who came out in a peaceful demonstration in Smara Street in the city of El Aaiun, the capital of the occupied Western Sahara, to demand a referendum on self-determination of Saharawi people, respect for human rights, release of all Saharawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons and stop the looting of Sahrawi natural resources, causing many casualties among Sahrawi demonstrators.
The President insisted on intervention to respect the legitimate demands of Sahrawi in order to stop the systematic and intensive looting of their natural wealth by the Moroccan State of occupation, eliminate the wall of the military occupation, the crime against humanity, release of all Saharawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons, reveal the fate of missing persons and open occupied Sahrawi territories to independent observers and international media.
