Norwegian NGO denounces human rights situation in Western Sahara

Submitted on

Algiers, Feb 13, 2014 (SPS) - The non-governmental organization Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) published a new report about the Saharawi issue on its website in which it particularly lamented the Moroccan violations of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.

Entitled “Occupied Country, displaced people,” the report also laid bare the inability of the international community to help the Sahrawi people to exercise their legitimate right to self-determination.

It also criticized the attitude of the Moroccan occupier which flouted all the UN resolutions related to the Sahrawi issue.

The report’s editor Richard Skretteberg regrets the fact that the Sahrawi people have never been able to exercise their right to self-determination so far, though the territory is qualified as a non-self-governing territory by the United Nations since 1966.

He also criticized the position of some western countries like United States of America, Spain and France regarding the Sahrawi issue “which either maintain positions of indifference or oppose the legitimate rights of the Sahrawi people.” (SPS)
