Petition to demand extension of MINURSO mandate for human rights monitoring

Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), Feb 27, 2014 (SPS) - A petition signed by the participants at the 38th anniversary of SADR proclamation has called on the UN Security Council to expand the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to include the monitoring and reporting of human rights in Western Sahara.


In a ceremony held today, Thursday, in the Wilaya of Boujdour to mark the 38th anniversary of the Saharawi Republic (SADR), the petition demanded “an immediate” referendum on the right to self-determination for the Saharawi people and expansion of the MINURSO mandate to include the monitoring and reporting of human rights.


“We, the signatories, ask the UN and Friends of Western Sahara (U.S., UK, France, Russia and Spain) to exert the necessary pressure on Morocco to fulfill its obligation and to facilitate the organization, without any further delay, a free and fair referendum on the issue of self-determination for the Saharawi people, in accordance with both the Settlement Plan approved by the UN Security Council – Resolution 690 (1990) and the universal rights contained within the charter and covenants of the UN,” indicated the petition.


This petition was signed by many people, who were present at the official ceremonies to celebrate SADR 38th anniversary, including of which international personalities and athletes. (SPS)
