Algiers, March 19, 2014 (SPS) - The African Union High Commissioner to Social and Cultural Affairs, Mustapha Sidiki Koloko, bemoaned, Tuesday in Algiers, the “desperate” situation of the Sahrawi refugees in Tindouf camps, he visited during a couple of days.

“The Humanitarian situation of the Sahrawi refugees is desperate, it is related to several aspects” both political and social, he affirmed after his meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ramtane Lamamra, underscoring the “need for improving it.”

“Everybody must get involved and take measures to relieve this situation,” said the AU High Commissioner, while answering a question relating to the place of the Sahrawi issue during the Africa-European Union Summit, planned on 6 - 7 April in Paris.

The president of the Sahrawi Red Crescent (CRS), Yahia Bouhabini, had recently called on the international community to act quickly to deal with the “very critical” humanitarian situation of Sahrawi refugees due to the significant decline in donor aid.

Regarding the issues raised with Lamamra, the High Commissioner for Social Affairs said he examine various issues and “learn from the wisdom” of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. (SPS)
