Brussels, April 2, 2014 (SPS) - The Saharawi MP Sueilma Beiruk, also vice-president of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), participated Monday and Tuesday in the Africa-EU parliamentary summit ahead of the 4th EU-Africa summit, to take place in Brussels from 2nd to 3rd April, 2014.
The summit addressed various topics of crucial interest to the peoples of the two continents, such as security, stability, good governance, unemployment, economic crisis and human rights.
Discussing the issue of human rights, European and African parliamentarians, including Ms. Sueilma Beiruk, spoke about the suffering experienced by the Saharawi citizens in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, reminding that Morocco’s occupying authorities still, since more than 39 years, ignore the most sacred human right of the Saharawi people, namely self-determination.
They also called for the immediate release of all Saharawi political prisoners and to establish a UN mechanism to monitor and report about human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
At a joint communique issued at the end of the meeting, the two parliaments stressed the need to resolve Western Sahara conflict in accordance with international legitimacy, through a UN-led direct negotiations between the two parties to the conflict, calling on the EU to coordinate with the African Union (AU) in this regard.
The Saharawi MP took this opportunity to hold several talks with members of the European and African parliaments. (SPS)
