Eugene Kontorovich criticizes Wall Street Journal’s article calling Western Sahara “disputed”

Washington, April 9, 2014 (SPS) - The U.S. professor at Northwestern University School of Law, Eugene Kontorovich, has criticized Wall Street Journal over a correction of an article it published on 3 April 2014, in which it described the territory of Western Sahara as “disputed”, while it is treated as occupied in the leading international law texts.


In an published Tuesday by the Washington Post, the U.S. journalist indicated that several resolutions of the General Assembly characterizes the territory of Western Sahara as occupied, adding that the UN Security Council called for Morocco to withdraw from it.


In a similar article entitled “Wall Street Journal gives Western Sahara to Morocco”, Eugene Kontorovich criticized the Wall Street Journal over reporting a speech of the Spanish Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz saying that “80,000 migrants were waiting in Morocco or along its border with Mauritania for a chance to reach the Melilla enclaves.”


The professor recalled that not only Morocco has no border with Mauritania, but rather, in between the two countries is Western Sahara, which currently illegally occupied by Morocco.


He regretted for the lack of outraged reaction from international law professors, experts, NGOs, and peace-loving people around the world. (SPS)
