CPJ urges Moroccan authorities to annul charges against Mahmud El-Haissan

New York, July 9, 2014 (SPS) - The Committee to Protect Journalists has called on the Moroccan authorities to drop the charges against the Saharawi journalist and blogger Mahmud El-Haissan.

“Journalists should never be subject to retaliation for coverage of sensitive topics,” said Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator, in a statement issued Tuesday, calling on the Moroccan authorities to “immediately” release the Saharawi journalist Mahmud El-Haissan.

According to a CPJ research, Moroccan government prevented coverage of Saharawi protests since 2004 and expelled foreign journalists from the area in 2010 when the city erupted in protests.

Mahmud El-Haissan was arrested by Moroccan occupying police on Friday, 4th July 2014, for having revealed Morocco’s human rights violations and the plundering of Western Sahara’s natural resources. (SPS)
