Algiers, August 21, 2014 (SPS) - The Saharawi Ambassador in Algiers, Mr. Ibrahim Ghali, affirmed Wednesday that Morocco "exercises pressure" and attempts in various ways to influence the UN envoy to Western Sahara, Mr. Christopher Ross, who will visit the occupied territories of Western Sahara in October.
In a statement to Algerian newspaper Al Bilad , the Sahrawi diplomat highlighted that the Moroccan regime is trying to "involveAlgeria" in its conflict with the Polisario Front, through its repeated attempts to influence the expected visit of the UN.
Mr. Ghali pointed out that the argument of the Moroccan regime is "weak," therefore it referred to Algeria to try to engage it as a party in the upcoming visit to the occupied territories," accusing it of bias in the Sahrawi issue.
Mr. Ghali’s remarks coincide with the fierce campaign led by some Moroccan parties to influence the UN Secretary General in an attempt to dismiss Mr. Ross, but the UN Security Council denied that and endorsed Mr. Ross to revive the peace settlement process through negotiations between the Polisario Front and Morocco in order to find a solution to enable the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.
