Oran (Algeria), Sept 10, 2014 (SPS) - A total of 1,200 tons of sugar and barley for the benefit of the Saharawi refugees on Wednesday delivered at the port of Oran, Algerian, by the World Food Programme of the United Nations.
These donations announced Wednesday at the port of Oran in the presence of the Italian Ambassador in Algeria, Consul General of Spain in Oran, representatives of the Algerian and Saharawi Red Crescent.
According to the WFP’s representative to Algeria, this new shipment includes nearly 532 tons of barley as donation from the Italian Government, and 650 tons of sugar from Cuba, whose logistic costs were covered by Spain.
The Italian contribution will cover the needs of the Saharawi refugees until the end of 2014.
During the past two years, Italy has contributed to the WFP operation in Algeria with over $ 700,000 as assistance to the Saharawi refugees.
Since 2013, Cuba has offered to WFP in Algeria a total of 1.776 tons of sugar.
WFP provides 90,000 general food rations plus 35,000 supplementary general food rations to the most vulnerable refugees from the Western Sahara.
The nutritional value of a WFP general food ration is equivalent to 2,166 kilocalories per person per day. (SPS)
