Saharawi people should be allowed to express their aspirations freely, says Algeria

New York, Oct 8, 2014 (SPS) - “The people of Western Sahara should be allowed to express their aspirations freely,” said Tuesday the Permanent Representative of Algeria to the UN, in his intervention before the UN Special Committee on Decolonization on Tuesday.

Recalling that Western Sahara is a Non-Self-Governing Territory, Algeria said is puzzled by the Moroccan representative’s effort to reinterpret the right of self-determination.

“The question of Western Sahara was one of decolonization and thus should be pursued as such,” underlined the Algerian diplomat, asked the UN and the international community to “reactivate the referendum process forthwith.”

Asserting that no country had recognized Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, he urged Morocco to find a solution within the framework of international law. (SPS)
