Oran (Algeria), December 11, 2014 (SPS) - Director of the Peace and Security Department (PSD) at the African Union (AU) El Ghassim Wane said Wednesday in Oran, Algeria, that Western Sahara issue required a "stronger" international action.

Noting "no significant progress was made in the search for a solution" to Western Sahara conflict, El Ghassime Wane stressed the need for "much stronger action" to settle the issue.

The AU official made the statement on the sidelines of the second day of the high-level seminar on peace and security in Africa.

"We called for the United Nations resolutions relating to the conflict to be applied, mainly those relevant to (Saharawi people's) right to self-determination," he said, adding that AU position was "clear and in line with this right."

"AU special envoy for Western Sahara, Chissano will shortly conclude his consultations around the issue and the outcome will be submitted to AU pertinent agencies to determine the actions to undertake in the next stage."  (SPS)
