Algiers, Jan 27, 2015 (SPS) - US State Department official affirmed on Sunday, that the United States has not changed its position with regard to the conflict in Western Sahara, and still supports the UN efforts to reach a peaceful, lasting and mutually acceptable solution.
“The position of the United States about Western Sahara issue has not changed in recent years, and we are looking forward to reaching a peaceful, lasting and mutually acceptable solution to this conflict,” said US official in a written statement quoted by Algeria Press Service (APS).
The same official underlined that the United States support UN efforts, including the efforts of Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara Christopher Ross and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara Kim Bolduc and United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
In this context, the official called on “the conflicting parties (Morocco and the Polisario Front) to work to achieving a peaceful, lasting and mutually acceptable solution.”
Worth reminding indeed, Western Sahara had been included since 1963 in the United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories and thus ruled by the Resolution 1514 of the UN General Assembly, which includes declaration on the Granting of independence to colonial Countries and Peoples.
Western Sahara is Africa’s last colony, occupied by Morocco since 1975 with the support of France.
The various UN Resolutions call upon the conflicting parties (Morocco and the Polisario Front) to pursue negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations in order to reach a just, political, lasting and mutually acceptable solution, guaranteeing the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.
