Saharawi Ambassador received by new President-elect of Nigeria

Abuja, April 29, 2015 (SPS) - Ambassador Ubbi Bachraya Bachir on Tuesday received by the new President-elect of Nigeria, General Mohammed Buhari, at his temporary residence in the capital Abuja, to deliver a congratulatory letter from the President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz.


President Mohamed Abdelaziz expresses, on his own behalf and on behalf of the government and people of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, his warmest felicitations to the Nigerian leader on his election recently as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, stated the letter.


Saharawi diplomat updated the Nigerian President on the latest developments concerning the situation in Western Sahara, including the current impasse on the UN/AU settlement plan due to Morocco’s obstruction to the UN-sponsored referendum on self-determination for the Saharawi people.


He also took note of President Buhari’s attention to Africa’s positions of solidarity with the struggle of the Saharawi people, and the repeated calls by the Africa Union to expedite the path of decolonization in Western Sahara.


It is to be noted that Nigeria recognized the Saharawi Republic (SADR) in November 1984 during the tenure of General Mohammed Buhari, current president of Nigeria.


Buhari won 54% of the cast votes in the presidential elections that took place in Nigeria on 28 March 2015. (SPS)
