Delegation of donor countries arrives in Saharawi refugee camps

Submitted on

Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), May 12, 2015 (SPS) - A delegation of the donor countries arrived Tuesday in the Saharawi refugee camps, as part of a visit to assess first-hand the overall humanitarian conditions of the Saharawi refugees, and inspect the projects funded by some donor countries.

The visit comes after the appeal made by the international humanitarian agencies and organizations to send an urgent humanitarian assistance to help overcome food deficit recorded in the Saharawi refugee camps.

President of the Saharawi Red Crescent, Mr. Bouhabaini Yahya, has previously asked the United Nations and international organizations to redouble their humanitarian aid in order to meet the minimum needs of Saharawi refugees.

In his latest report on the situation concerning Western Sahara published on 10 April 2015, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged the international community to provide urgent additional funding for the UNHCR mandate programme in the Saharawi refugee camps, given the existing gaps in key areas of assistance such as protection, health, nutrition, food security, shelter, water and sanitation.
