Birlehlu (Liberated Zones), June 20, 2015 (SPS) - The President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mohamed Abdelaziz, called on the United Nations to urgently intervene to free the Saharawi activist Salah Lebsir and all Saharawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons.
"We call on the UN to assume its full responsibility to ensure the safety and protection of the rights of Saharawi citizens in the occupied territories, and create an effective UN mechanism to monitor and report violations of human rights in Western Sahara and intervene for the release of Salah Lebsir and all Saharawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons," wrote the President of the Republic in a letter to the UN Secretary General, Ban-ki-Moon.
The President of Republic stressed "the immediate cessation of the illegal Moroccan plundering of Saharawi natural resources and the dismantling of military wall of the occupier which constitutes a crime against humanity will certainly help in creating a favorable atmosphere for the success of United Nations efforts to decolonization the last colony in Africa."
He also called for exerting pressure on Morocco to shed light on the fate of more than 600 Saharawi disappeared since the Moroccan military invasion of Western Sahara.
Salah Lebsir was abducted 6 June by agents of Moroccan intelligence on the basis of false accusations and confessions under torture. He was imprisoned at the Carcel Negra (Black Jail) in the occupied city of El Aaiun, the capital of Western Sahara.
The Saharawi activist was abducted and persecuted by the Moroccan authorities for his participation in peaceful demonstrations calling for the protection of human rights in Western Sahara and the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination and independence. (SPS)
