Speaker of Parliament reviews national policies for empowerment of Saharawi woman

Johannesburg, August 7, 2015 (SPS) - Speaker of the Saharawi National Council (Parliament) Mr. Jatri Addouh takes part at 7th Annual Conference of Speakers of African Parliaments, held by the Pan-African Parliament on August 6-7 under the theme: “2015: Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063”.


Speaking in the conference, the Saharawi official highlighted the programmes and plans set forth by the Saharawi Republic (SADR) to empower women and promote their role, in addition to achieve gender equality.


With regard to the ways to enable Saharawi women politically, Speaker of the Saharawi Parliament reviewed the national policies designed to empower woman, protect the family, and develop legislations.


He, in this respect, underlined that SADR encourages women to participate in the conduct of public affairs, a thing contributed to the improvement of social affair through cooperatives, micro credits and family gardens.


The official hailed the considerable results achieved by Saharawi woman in the battle for liberation and building of the state, recalling that Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara remains a big challenge that impedes the national efforts in this regard.


Mr. Jatri Addouh hailed the very advanced position of the African Union (UN), calling for intensified efforts to accelerate the organization of self-determination referendum in Western Sahara.


He, moreover, urged AU’s specialized institutions, including of which Peace and Security Council and the African Commission of Human and People’s Rights, to do more for the respect of human rights and to halt the pillaging of Western Sahara’s natural resources.


Speaker of the Parliament is accompanied by Mr. Salha Al-Abd, ambassador in South Africa, Ms. Sweilma Beiruk, vice-president of the Pan-African Parliament, and Mr. Jamal Bandir, PAP member representing the Saharawi Republic. (SPS)
