Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands), 2 January, 2016- Spain has a “historical debt” to the Sahrawi people and a great responsibility in the current situation in Western Sahara, said the representative of the Polisario Front in Spain, Hamoudi Bucharaya Beyun.
“Spain must play an active role in the search of a solution to the conflict and exert pressure on Morocco to put an end to its intransigence, respect international law, and accept the holding of a self-determination referendum for the Sahrawi people,” said Beyun, in a statement to the press following a meeting, last week, with the president of the Canary Islands’ government, Fernando Clavijo.
In addition, Beyun expressed his wish to see the next Spanish government take “a more positive position in favour of the Western Sahara issue, contrary to the position adopted by the successive governments.”
For his part, Clavijo reiterated, in a meeting with the representative of the Polisario Front, “his government’s and the people of the Canary Islands’ support to the fight of the Sahrawi people for freedom and self-determination”.
Calvijo also reiterated “his government’s support to the efforts made by the Secretary General of the United Nations, and its Personal Envoy, Christopher Ross, to reach a solution guaranteeing the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence.”
He underlined “his commitment to intensify efforts to urge the Spanish government to assume its historic responsibility to the Sahrawi people, and play an active role in the United Nations Security Council to accelerate the decolonization of Western Sahara.” (SPS)
