Western Sahara issue in the framework of international law Seminar at the University of Stockholm

Stockholm (Sweden), January 27, 2016 (SPS) - Stockholm International Center for Law and Justice and the Department of Swedish International Commission of Jurists and the defenders of civil rights organized seminar under the title "Western Sahara within the framework of international law," the recognition of the state?, with the participation of Sahrawi delegation and large number of personalities in the political, human rights, and civil sphere.


the lecturers discussed deeply the historical development of the Western Sahara issue and its legal background since 1966 until now, arguing in their analysis of the conclusions based on the Pure requirements of international law, which confirms that Western Sahara is decolonization issue, land of conflict, illegally occupied and the Saharwi people has the right to exercise their right in Self-determination.

 

The Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and UN Legal Counsel, Hans Corell said during the discussion that the advisory opinion which he submitted to UN in 2002 concerning the non-legality, in the context of international law, of the Moroccan authorities grants and contracts with foreign companies to explore for mineral resources in the occupied Western Sahara, asserting the invalidity of Morocco-European Union agreements with regard to fisheries from legal side.

“If the exploration and exploitation activities continued in disregard of the interests and wishes of the people of Western Sahara, it will be a flagrant violation of the principles of international law applicable to the relevant natural resources in non-self-governing territory.” added Hans Corell.



It worth mentioning here that the conference was moderated by Mr. Mahmoudi with the presence of Professor in international law Powell Woorank and the Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and UN Legal Counsel, Hans Corell as lecturers. (SPS)
