Madrid, February 24, (SPS) - Spanish authorities affirmed their continual support to UN efforts allowing the finding of a just and lasting solution to the Sahrawi cause.

"Spain supports international efforts to find a just and lasting political solution (...) that guarantees the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination," said Spanish Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Ignacio Ibanez.

"Spain will continue to provide support to the UN efforts and his Personal Envoy for Western Sahara to reach a solution enabling the Saharawi people to exercise the right to freedom and self-determination," the same official added.

UN Envoy Christopher Ross arrived Monday in Spain as part of a tour that led him to Algeria, to the Sahrawi refugee camps and in Mauritania.

The Spanish coordination of associations of solidarity and friendship with the Saharawi people has recently expressed the wish that 2016 brings positive change through the "Spanish government change" to support the legitimate aspirations and rights of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence.

Registered since 1966 on the list of Non-Self-Governing Territories and therefore eligible for the application of resolution 1514 of the UN General Assembly, Western Sahara is the last colony in Africa, occupied since 1975 by Morocco. SPS
