Algiers, October 7, 2024 (SPS) - The Algerian National Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People affirmed that the decision of the European Court of Justice invalidating the trade agreements between the European Union and Morocco relating to the resources exploited in the occupied Sahrawi territories is a “historic and victorious step” for the Sahrawi people and the Polisario Front in their struggle for dignity, freedom and independence.
The committee expressed, in a statement issued on Sunday, its "deep satisfaction" with the decision of the European Court of Justice and stressed that it also serves as a "reminder of the power of international law that must be respected and applied literally through avoiding considerations that are subjective and dangerous for international security".
The statement called on the European Union to "effectively respect their justice and implement the ruling of the Court".
The European Court of Justice rejected the appeals filed by the Council and the Commission of the European Union against the decision of the European General Court, which stipulates the cancellation of two agreements between Morocco and the European Union because they include the illegally occupied Western Sahara, and decided to cancel these two agreements.
The European Court of Justice ruled that "the 2019 EU-Morocco trade agreements on fisheries and agricultural products, which were not approved by the people of Western Sahara, were concluded in disregard of the principles of the right to self-determination of this people."
