Polisario Representative in Italy: Resolving the conflict in Western Sahara is possible, but there is no political will in the Security Council to do it

Rome (Italy) – 15 September 2024 (SPS)- Polisario Front’s Representative in Italy, Mrs. Fatima Mahfoud, affirmed that decolonizing Western Sahara is possible through the application of international law, and that a solution exists and is feasible, were it not for the lack of political will among some permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

During an evening fundraising event organized by Medicina e Assistenza ai Margini Association (MAM) on Sunday evening in Rome, Fatima Mahfoud provided a detailed overview of the nature of Italian solidarity projects with the Sahrawi people. Attended by dozens of doctors, healthcare workers, and civil society figures from the city, the event was aimed at raising funds to support the association’s projects in the Sahrawi refugee camps.

The Sahrawi diplomat highlighted the importance of the association’s work in providing comprehensive medical services to hundreds of Saharawi children. She emphasized that the summer vacation programs for Sahrawi children in Italy are well-designed and supervised by associations that enhance the Italian nation’s reputation for humanitarian service to the Sahrawi refugee children.

The Sahrawi Representative also touched on recent political developments in the conflict in Western Sahara, noting the critical status of international relations in general.
She pointed to the efforts of some well-known powers to obstruct any peaceful and legal solutions to ongoing conflicts, and their attempts to exacerbate tensions by supporting occupying forces, whether in Western Sahara or Palestine.
On another note, the President and members of MAM presented details about the medical projects the irassociation is conducting in the Sahrawi refugee camps and in Italy to provide medical support to Sahrawi refugees.

Attendees also had the opportunity to listen to readings of poetry and stories by Sahrawi writers and poets from the Sahrawi cultural group "Generación de la Amistad saharaui", and to watch a short film about the activities and trips of the association’s members to the Saharawi refugee camps, where they offer voluntary medical services to the refugees.
