Algerian upper house condemns support of French government to "autonomy plan"

Algiers, 28 July 2024 (SPS) - The office of the Council of the Nation (upper house of Parliament) condemned Sunday, in a statement, the "shameful" decision of the French government to support the "autonomy plan" in contempt of Western Sahara people's just cause.

" The office of the Council of the Nation, chaired by Mujaheed Salah Goudjil, the speaker of the lower house, strongly condemns and disapproves of the French government's shameful support to the "autonomy plan" in the territories of Western Sahara as part of the alleged Moroccan sovereignty," the statement said.

For the Council of the Nation, it is a "hazardous drift" that " torpedoes the efforts of the United Nations," which put Western Sahara, many decades ago, on the list of territories pending decolonisation.

"The decision runs counter to world diplomatic practice and is symptomatic of bartering of principles for interests," the statement said.

"Through this decision, France tramples on United Nations resolutions and the advisory opinions of its bodies, and endorses the occupation of a member state and founder of the African Union."
