Solidarity evening with Sahrawi people held in Sydney, Australia

Sydney (Australia), 2 March 2024 (SPS) -  The Australia Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People organized a solidarity evening in Sydney, Australia, on March 2, 2024. The event featured speeches and documentary films about the suffering of the Sahrawi people under the Moroccan occupation.

Local MP Ms. Kobi Shetty gave a speech in which she said that it is time for the Sahrawi people to be able to exercise their right to self-determination and independence. She added that the violence, repression, and human rights violations that the Sahrawi people are subjected to are appalling.

After the documentary films were screened, Mohamed-Fadel Kamal, the Polisario Front representative in Australia, and Dr. Randi Irwin led a discussion on the current situation in Western Sahara. They spoke about the resumption of the war after Morocco broke the ceasefire, its continued human rights violations, its plundering of Sahrawi resources, and its defiance of international resolutions calling for a referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people. They also discussed the situation in the Sahrawi refugee camps and the harsh conditions that thousands of Sahrawis have been living in since they were displaced by the Moroccan invasion and occupation of their homeland.
