Namibian President reaffirms Namibia's firm support for the right of the Sahrawi people to independence

Windhoek (Namibia) February 25, 2024 (SPS) - The new Namibian President, Nangolo Mbumba, renewed his country’s support for the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to freedom and independence, in his speech on Saturday, during the memorial service for the late Namibian President, Haji Geingob, in front of dozens of delegations from various countries, at Independence Stadium in the Namibian capital, Windhoek.

A Sahrawi delegation, led by the Member of the National Secretariat and President of the Sahrawi National Council, Mr. Hamma Salama, participated in the memorial ceremony, accompanied by the Ambassador in charge of Africa, Mr. Mohamed Yaslem Beisat, representing the President of the Republic and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, in this painful event.

In his speech, the new President of Namibia renewed Namibia’s firm adherence to its unconditional support for the Sahrawi people’s struggle towards freedom and independence, considering that this position is a continuation of the approach of his predecessor, in whom the issues of liberation and the right of peoples to self-determination remained the top priorities of his international policy, describing the support of the Sahrawi people as “a token of loyalty” to the memory of the deceased and to all the people of Namibia who will not enjoy security as long as the people of Western Sahara are oppressed.”

For its part, the Sahrawi delegation delivered a speech on behalf of the President of the Sahrawi Republic at the funeral ceremony of the late Namibian President, where it expressed the heartfelt condolences and sadness of the Sahrawi people at the passing of one of the great sons of Africa and Namibia, who spared no effort to support just causes and the right of peoples to their freedom and independence, most importantly the Sahrawi people, who highly appreciates Namibia’s absolute and continuous support for his right to life and existence.

The Sahrawi delegation stressed the Sahrawi state’s insistence on continuing to promote and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and friendly relations with the sister country of Namibia, with which the Sahrawi Republic shares a deep belief in the basic principles of human rights, the rights of peoples, and the principles of African unity and a common destiny.

The new Namibian President, Nangolo Mbumba, who was sworn in as successor to his late predecessor, Haji Geingob, has enjoyed a long political career in the ruling South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) party and has served in various ministries, including as Minister of Finance, Education and Safety and Security.
