Spanish government held accountable before parliament for its support to Moroccan occupation

Submitted on

Madrid, 31 May 2020 (SPS) - Spanish MP for the Galician Nationalist Bloc, Mr. Néstor Rego Candamil, has seized the Spanish government over the recent incident caused by the Minister of Foreign Affairs by deleting the flag of the Sahrawi Republic among the flags of the African continent countries in a tweet on its official Twitter account on the occasion of Africa Day, which coincides with the 57th anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity, the African Union, the organization of which the Sahrawi Republic is among its founding members.
In a written question addressed to the Government, the deputy stressed that the action of the Minister of Foreign Affairs was contrary to the Constitutive Act of the African Union, since it targeted one of the founding members of this continental organization, a mistake that cannot be tolerated, because it is, on the one hand, issued by the head of diplomacy to the Spanish government and, on the other hand, it makes the rights of the Sahrawi people vulnerable to economic and political interests with the Kingdom of Morocco.
The deputy clarified that the position expressed by the Spanish Foreign Ministry reflects the government's continued evasion of international obligations with regard to the referendum on self-determination of the Sahrawi people, wondering to what extent the Government, specifically the Minister of Foreign Affairs, intends to correct its position by formally recognizing the Sahrawi Republic as a sovereign state, establishing bilateral relations with it and mediating in favour of the referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people.
