Brussels, 16 May 2022 (SPS) - The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, reaffirmed the common position of the EU countries towards the Western Sahara issue, which "fully support the efforts led by the United Nations" to reach a political solution acceptable to the parties to the conflict, the Polisario Front and Morocco.
In his response on Sunday on behalf of the European Commission on the Sahrawi issue, Mr. Borrell reaffirmed that "the EU's position on Western Sahara - which reflects the existing common view among EU member states - is to fully support the efforts led by the United Nations for a political process to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the question of Western Sahara, in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council.
"The EU considers that all issues concerning Western Sahara and its status must be addressed, in accordance with international law, in the framework of the ongoing negotiations under the leadership of the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura," Borrell added.
He further stressed: "the UN-led process is open and its final outcome should be decided by the parties within the parameters of UN Security Council resolutions.
Included since 1966 in the list of non-self-governing territories, and therefore eligible for the application of UN General Assembly resolution 1514 on decolonization, Western Sahara is the last colony in Africa, occupied since 1975 by Morocco.
