UN denounces construction of sand wall by Morocco

Submitted on

New York, April 6, 2019 (SPS) - The United Nations has denounced the construction by Morocco of a new wall of sand near occupied Sahrawi territory of Mahbes which it described as a "major violation" of the military agreement N 1, demanding the dismantling of this barrier as well as all military posts deployed by the Moroccan army in restricted areas.
"The Royal Moroccan Army has built a new sand wall near Mahbes, which currently extends 80.26 kilometers from north to south, parallel to the existing wall." This is a major violation of the Military Agreement No. 1, said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his preliminary report on the situation in Western Sahara, transmitted to the Security Council.
This double agreement signed by the Polisario Front in 1997 and by Morocco in 1998, governs the relations of the two parties to the conflict with the MINURSO and defines the demilitarized zone as well as the presence of Sahrawi and Moroccan forces west and east of the wall. (SPS)
