Madrid, June 10, 2018 (SPS) - President of the Spanish Coordination of Solidarity Associations with Western Sahara underlined, in a letter sent to the new Spanish head of Government Pedro Sanchez that “the Spanish State can’t remain impassive with regard to what is happening in occupied Western Sahara.
Congratulating him for his new post of Prime minister, President of Ceas-sahara José Taboada also said in his letter that “the Spanish State must provide all sorts of initiatives to reach a fair and lasting solution to the suffering of the Sahrawi people.”
The presence of Spain within the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva during the period 2018-2020 is “ the opportunity for our country to adopt a strong and active position in defending the international legality and human rights of the Sahrawi people”, added the source.
He said that a “new hopeful phase” opens with the socialist government and called it “to find a solution to this conflict through dialogue and negotiations between the two sides but with great determination and courage that will allow the Sahrawi people to live freely in their territories” and exercise their inalienable right to self-determination. This is a “legitimate aspiration,” he added.
“We are confident that the socialist government will work for the settlement of this issue in order to end years of suffering, exile and occupation,” he added.
“Spain has a historical debt to the Sahrawi people who have been peacefully struggling for their independence for more than forty years,” said the source. (SPS)
