Abuja (Nigeria) March 12, 2016 (SPS) - Nigerian President Muhammad Buhari renewed Friday Nigeria's unconditional and unwavering support to the struggle of the Saharawi people for self-determination and independence, during a reception to the envoy of the Saharawi President, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Salem Ould Salek.
The Nigerian President expressed deep regret at the unjustified delay by the international community in the organization of a referendum of self-determination despite the cease-fire for more than 25 years and the deployment of MINURSO in the region, expressing the intention of the Nigerian government to continue efforts to accelerate the decolonization in Western Sahara, particularly that the position of the African Union is advanced in this regard.
The Sahrawi minister transferred to the Nigerian president greetings from his Sahrawi counterpart Mohamed Abdelaziz, and briefed him on the latest developments related to the Sahrawi issue, on the light of the visit of the UN Secretary General in the region and that Morocco has now become in an open confrontation with the United Nations, Africa Union, European Union and all international human rights bodies.
The meeting, which took place at the headquarters of the Nigerian presidency in Abuja, was attended on the Sahrawi party by the Saharawi Ambassador to Nigeria, and on the Nigerian party by the Foreign Minister, the Secretary General of the Presidency, and senior official from the Nigerian Foreign Ministry.
