Western Sahara committed to advance decolonization process after Morocco AU admission

Submitted on

Algiers, February 20, 2017 (SPS) - The Sahrawi people remain firmly committed to the implementation of the decolonization process in its occupied territory, in particular after Morocco admission to the African Union (AU) and the ensuing commitments for the compliance with the Pan-African Organization's rules and the freedoms of African peoples.
Over 40 years of occupation of Western Sahara and more than 25 years since the signing of the ceasefire agreement between the two parties in conflict (Frente POLISARIO and Morocco) that initially underpins the settlement peace process under the UN aegis, "the Sahrawi people have not yet seen any signal from the Moroccan side for an end to the occupation of the Sahrawi territory," said the POLISARIO UN representative Ahmed Boukhari.
The official of Frente POLISARIO, the sole representative of the Sahrawi people, said that Morocco's accession to the AU “could be an opportunity to resolve the conflict in Western Sahara, if Rabat does not play unclear game, especially as its accession was made on the basis of its approval of the AU Charter it has signed, and must therefore respect its commitment.
On the other hand, Sahrawi Foreign Minister, Mohamed Ould Salek, said that "Morocco, by signing the African Union’s Constitutive Act, has officially recognized its borders internationally" i.e. those not including Western Sahara.
"If the Moroccan occupier fails to fulfill its commitments, it would be confronted to an inextricable situation and isolation at both the African and the world level, for the foundations of the pan-African  organization creation are the liberation of the continent, decolonization and the prohibition of all practices of land-grabbing by force," he said.
Waiting for Morocco's commitments to be respected, "the African Union remains the main guarantor, alongside the United Nations, of the implementation of the settlement plan constantly blocked by the Moroccan regime," said the Sahrawi FM who considers that Morocco membership to the Union "pragmatically obliges" the kingdom to adhere to the approaches of the two African and UN organizations with regard to the settlement of Western Sahara conflict.SPS
