Addis Ababa, 7 December 2020 (SPS) - President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), Brahim Ghali called on African Union and its Peace and Security Council (PSC) to assume responsibility in the face of the Moroccan aggression against the Sahrawi people, and to work for silencing the guns in Western Sahara through a firm and determined African effort.
Speaking at the 14th extraordinary session of the African Union on "Silencing the Guns" on Sunday, President Ghali emphasized that "the situation is very critical and requires the Summit, the African Union and the AU Peace and Security Council to assume their responsibilities in the face of the current aggression against the Sahrawi people."
Stressing the need to "silence weapons in Western Sahara, in an exceptional and determined effort to restore security in the region," President Ghali said "the responsibility is great, and it requires a firm position to face the Moroccan aggression and expansion that threatens peace, security and stability in Africa."
He called, in this context, for the adoption of Prime Minister of Lesotho's proposal, stressing that "the summit is sovereign in taking the appropriate decisions, especially when it comes to the Sahrawi Republic."
The draft decision, presented by the Prime Minister of Lesotho, gives visibility to Western Sahara issue by placing it on the agenda of the AU Peace and Security Council, after many attempts by Rabat to exclude this African Union decision-making body from the settlement process of Western Sahara conflict.
