UN Security Council holds its semi-annual on Western Sahara

New York, October 18, 2016 (SPS) - The UN Security Council will hold today evening it half yearly session over the Western Sahara, in the presence of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary General to Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, the head of United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, Kim Bolduc.
 
Informed sources confirmed that the meeting will discuss three points; the first will be the tense situation in the buffer zone “Guergarat", and the need to take a decisive measure concerning it. The second will the preparation for a fifth round of negotiations between Morocco and the Frente Polisario and the third related to the efforts to enable MINURSO to exercise fully its functions through the return of all of its civilian component, reported APS news agency,
 
In this context, the Council will review the  two field reports about the developments on the political level, and progress in the consultations conducted by Christopher Ross with the parties to hold a round of negotiations, the situation in " Guergarat ",and the return of MINURSO to the its tasks in Western Sahara.
 
Christopher Ross will submit today a report to the UN Security Council on Western Sahara issue in the light of the latest developments in the occupied territories, where he will present orally in this respect the outcome before the session, which will be closed.
 
According to the same sources Mr. Ross, who still finds difficult to obtain the cooperation of Morocco for the resumption of the UN process will inform the SC on the obstacles putted by morocco to hinders its movement to prevents him from revival the negotiations between the parties to the conflict."
 
The session comes days after UNGA’s approval of resolution emphasizing the need for the return of the parties of the conflict to the negotiating table and reach a political solution that ensures the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination. SPS
