AU reiterates position regarding Sahrawi issue, calls on Security Council to take action urgently

Rome (Italy), January 20, 2017 (SPS) - The Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Alma Tadissi affirmed, in his speech at the international conference of support for the Sahrawi people in Rome (Italy), the African Union’s unwavering position regarding the Sahrawi issue.
During this meeting organized Monday at the headquarters of the Italian parliament on the theme “Sahrawi people: what prospects?” Alma Tadissi denounced the equivocations of the international community which hesitates to take a clear and honest decision regarding the Sahrawi issue, in conformity with the international laws and charters.” He cited the vain recommendations of the Security Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations since the beginning of the conflict, and which underline the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
The AU representative called on the Security Council to take action to impose the respect for human rights in the region, adding that “the world we live in is not fair enough to force Morocco to respect its international commitments, which allows it to continue violating international law and human rights.”
Ambassadors and representative of diplomatic missions to Rome underlined in their speeches, their countries’ support to the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, including South Africa, Nigeria, Angola, Ecuador and Venezuela.
This meeting was an opportunity to address an urgent message to the Security Council and to the world on the absolute need to respect international law.SPS
