United Nations (New York), Oct 11, 2011 (SPS) - “The European Union remains concerned about the implications of the Western Sahara conflict for security and cooperation in the region,” assured Mr. Witold Sobków, ambassador of Poland to the United Nations and expressed the EU’s support for the UN efforts to achieve a solution providing the self-determination of the Saharawi people.

speaking to the UN Special Committee on Decolonization on Monday, Polish ambassador reaffirmed the EU’s full support for the Secretary-General’s efforts to achieve “a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution, which will provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara in the context of arrangements consistent with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations."

The Polish representative expressed continuation of EU “to encourage the parties to work towards such a solution, within the framework of the United Nations,” commending the ongoing efforts of Ambassador Christopher Ross and his ongoing consultations with the parties and neighbouring states.

The Mr. Sobków expressed therefore “full support for the intensification of holding informal meetings, including the several rounds of negotiations in Manhasset, Long Island and in Mellieha Malta since the adoption of resolution 65/112.”

In this respect, he welcomed the discussions on the ideas put forward by the Secretary-General in paragraph 120 of his report (S/2011/249). (SPS)
