Timor-Leste for the struggle of Saharawi people for freedom and independence (official

United Nations (New York), Oct 12, 2011 (SPS) - The Director of the Bilateral Affairs in the Timor-Leste Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Lisualdo Gaspar, reiterated Monday the strong and firm position of his country to the struggle of the Saharawi people for freedom and self-determination.

Addressing the UN Fourth Committee, the Timor-Leste official highlighted the similarities between the struggle of the people of Western Sahara and Timor-Leste, stressing on the need to enable the Saharawi people of their right to self-determination and to put an end to the long-standing conflict.

Mr. Gaspar asserted that his country “supports the course of negotiations between the Polisario Front and Morocco under aegis of the United Nations,” adding that East Timor “has granted since 2010 full diplomatic representation for the Embassy of the Saharawi Republic in Dili.”

He finally expressed hope to see the international community working together for the decolonization of the African continent.” (SPS)
