Australian NGO denounces terrorist attack on Saharawi refugee camps

Submitted on

Canberra (Australia), October 25, 2011 (SPS) - The Australia Western Sahara Association (AWSA) has condemned the terrorist attack on the Saharawi refugee camps that resulted in international aid workers being injured and kidnapped, in a statement Monday.

AWSA expressed its deepest sympathy for victims and their families and solidarity with the Saharawi people.

The Organization also expressed hope to see these hostages released immediately and a proper investigation so justice can be done and the motivation behind the attack exposed.

Three European aid workers, two Spanish citizens and one an Italian, working in the Saharawi refugee camps, were kidnapped on Saturday night by terrorists.

The victims are Mr. Fernandez Coin Aino of Spanish nationality, member of the Association of Friendship with the Saharawi people in Extremadura (Spain), Enrico Gonyalons, a Spanish citizen and member of the Spanish NGO Mundubat and Rossella Urru from Italy, member of the Italian NGO CCISPP.

The kidnappers who infiltrated from the neighbouring territories of Mali, attacked the guest house where foreign aid workers stay near the Saharawi refugee camps, using a four wheel vehicle and firearms. This is the first terrorist attack on the camp in 36 years.

Spanish hostage, Enric Gonyalons and a Saharawi security guard were injured in an exchange of fire, the statement recalled. (SPS)
