Banjul (Gambia), Oct 29, 2011 (SPS) - The Saharawi Republic (SADR) is taking part in the works of the 50th ordinary session of the African Union Commission on Human and People's Rights (ACHPR) held in the Gambian capital, Banjul, from Oct 25 to Nov 4.

Speaking during the opening session, Mr. Abba Haisan, secretary general of the Saharawi Jurists Union, informed the AU Commission about the criminal act on three foreign cooperators working in the humanitarian field in the Saharawi refugee camps, who kidnapped by an armed terrorists on Oct 22, 2011.

The Saharawi official considered that such terrorist attack on safe region co-residence by defenseless Saharawi refugees including women, children and elderly along with representatives of international associations and NGOs working in the humanitarian field aims to “terrorize the foreign cooperators, jeopardize the international solidarity with the Saharawi refugees and tighten the noose.”

He therefore expressed confidence of the Saharawi government and people that such heinous criminal act will not affect the solidarity and humanitarian noble work, calling on the African Commission to condemn this cowardly attack and to stand firm in face of such terrorist acts as to support and assist the Saharawi people and government to confront this serious scourge.

In relevant context, Mr. Abba Haisan recalled to the prominent African legal mechanisms relating to human rights ratified by the Saharawi Republic, national merits in order to amend the constitution to advance the institutional and legal structure of SADR and a number of efforts and steps taken by SADR to apply requirements of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights.

He also recalled that 2011 is marked by the start of 3rd international decade for the eradication of colonialism (2011-2020) “which highlights once again the current delay in completing this rigorous endeavor concerning the decolonization of Western Sahara.”

The Saharawi Republic (SADR) is represented in the 50th ordinary session of the AU Commission on Human and People's Rights by the Secretary General of the Saharawi Jurists Union, Mr. Abba Haisan. (SPS)
