Polisario Front appeals for EU major involvement in resolving Western Sahara conflict

Brussels, Dec 06, 2011 (SPS) - Minister Delegate in charge of Europe, Mohamed Sidati urged, Monday, for major involvement of European Union in resolving the Western Sahara conflict.

In interview with “Passim” blog, Minister Mohamed Sidati stressed that "EU should actively engage and have the means to put pressure on Morocco."

Mr. Mohamed Sidati regretted that the French position prevents European foreign policy from more "integrated approach to the conflict", saying "unfortunately France with the support of the Spanish socialist government gave privileged status to Morocco although it does not respect human rights".

Saharawi official requested EU considerable role in UN efforts particularly in resolving the Western Sahara question as well as to protect human rights.

“EU even signs illegal fisheries agreements with Morocco includes the territorial waters of occupied Western Sahara” he recalled.

"The European Union agreements often include the clause on respect for human rights but in the Moroccan case this clause is blocked, this situation must be corrected," Mr. Sidati insisted.

"The best thing you (EU) can do to build a fair Maghreb, where there is no discrimination, is to solve the conflict of Western Sahara, which does not hurt Morocco," he claimed.

“Lengthening the suffering of the people, by a mirage, it hurts and postpones settlement," Minister Sidati concluded. (SPS)
