Austrian MP welcomes EP's refusal to extend fishing agreement with Morocco

Vienna (Austria), December 17, 2011 (SPS) MEP and Member of  Human Rights Commission at Austrian parliament, Petra Bayer, welcomed Friday the European Parliament's refusal to extend the EU- Morocco fisheries agreement, which includes the territorial waters of Western Sahara, according to a statement received by SPS.

 

Austrian MP underlined that "any extension of this agreement is immoral and not in accordance with international legitimacy, because it harms EU reputation ."

 

She also criticized policy of European Commission, saying that "the agreement would encourage Morocco in pursuing its policy of occupation and denial of  the right of Western Sahara people to self determination and independence. "

 

Ms. Bayer has called on EU  "to cooperate with the UN through the implementation of a referendum in Western Sahara which was signed by both parties, Polisario Front and Morocco under the auspices of UN in 1991."
