Bosnia-Herzegovina Appoints Vjekoslav Bevanda Prime Minister

Submitted on

Sarajevo, Jan 12, 2012 (SPS) - Conservative Vjekoslav Bevanda, of the Democratic Croatian Union Party, was appointed today Prime Minister of Bosnia-Herzegovina under a pact among the Muslim, Serb and Croatian communities.

Bevanda won 31 votes from the 42-member House, and a 30-day deadline to assemble a nine-member government. The main party leaders proposed him last December to end a 15-month crisis.

In his inaugural address in Parliament, the newly-appointed premier vowed to consolidate the Balkan country's economy, work for the European Union membership and foment unity among the three communities towards expanding national development.

Bosnia-Herzegovina has had a power gap since the October 2010 polls due to disagreements among Muslim, Croatian and Serb parties over the distribution of posts, but in December, they finally agreed on three ministries each and implementing two bills to run a census and distribute state aid to pave the way for EU admission.
