Building of Maghreb Union will not be valid as long as Morocco occupies Western Sahara, confirmed President of Republic

Seville (Spain), Feb 6, 2012 (SPS) - “Building of the Maghreb Union will not be valid as long as Morocco occupies Western Sahara,” has confirmed the President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Frente Polisario, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, in a press conference held Saturday in Seville on the sidelines of the 37th European Coordination Conference of Support to the Sahrawi Saharawi People (EUCOCO).

Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz warned to build the Maghreb Union on mines that might be exploded at any time without the independence of Western Sahara, emphasizing that the construction of the Maghreb “must begin by imposing, on each of its components, the respect for international agreements and respect the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination.”

Responding to the Tunisian Interim President Moncef Marzouki call to Morocco to return to the African Union, he said “we have heard such speech for thirty-seven years, but we are surprised to hear it from a leadership coming through a democratic process and a revolution that raised the banner of human rights.”

“Governments that are a culmination of the Arab Spring and which call for the Maghreb Union construction must spare no effort to convince Morocco to respect rights of the Saharawi people, as a prelude to build the Maghreb,” he added in the same regard. (SPS)
