Submitted on

Melbourne (Australia), Feb 27, 2012 (SPS) - The Saharawi flag raised today on the building of the municipality of Leichhardt in Sydney, Australia, and in other cities like Melbourne, Fremantle Town Hall and Newcastle Town Hall to mark the thirty-sixth anniversary of the Saharawi Republic proclamation.

The ceremony was attended by Ms. Mayor Rochelle Porteous, the Saharawi representative to Australia as well as members of the Australia Western Sahara Association (AWSA).

Secretary of the Ballarat Trades and Labour Council Mr. Paul Clempson, who raised the flag on top of the Trades Hall, shouted “we are supporting the move because the Sahrawi people are being unfairly treated, and being manipulated and dominated by the Moroccans.”

A fund-raising dinner will be organized with music and a guest speaker Dr. Carmela Baranowska, who is an award-winning documentary maker and a lecturer in media at the ACU University.

The event is organized by Australia Western Sahara Association (AWSA).

It should be recalled the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic was proclaimed on February 27, 1976 one day after the withdrawal of the last Spanish soldier from Western Sahara Territory. (SPS)
