Shaheed Al Hafed (refugee camps), March 19, 2012 (SPS) - The President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Frente Polisario, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, reaffirmed continuation of the POLISARIO to cooperate with efforts of the United Nations to enable the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and independence, highlighting the positive reply of the POISARIO to UN Secretary General demand to continue negotiations under supervision of his Personal Envoy, although no progress has been achieved due to Rabat intransigence and obstruction.

President of the Republic commended, in an interview with Radio Algeria International, the discussion of several issues in the last round of negotiations, particularly human rights file, as well as the types of torture and humiliation experienced by the Saharawis in the occupied territories, stressing on the need to respect human rights until the referendum on self- determination being conducted, appealing to the United Nations to pressurize the Moroccan government to respect the issue of human rights in Western Sahara.

In relevant context, he welcomed visit of the UN Envoy for Western Sahara, Mr. Christopher Ross, next May to the region, considering it “an opportunity to exert pressure on Morocco and give new breathe to the work of the UN Mission in Western Sahara, “especially after it lost its credibility in sight of the Saharawis in light of its inability to do its task, whether in the organization of the referendum or protecting the Saharawi citizens from the oppression and tyranny of Moroccan occupation.”

The President Mohamed Abdelaziz noted that the last round of preliminary negotiations between Polisario Front and Morocco “has failed because of the intransigence and obstruction of the Moroccan government,” expressed full regret at the failure to make significant progress due to Rabat intransigence and obstruction for the efforts made by the United Nations.

It should be recalled that the ninth round of the preliminary negotiations between the Polisario Front and Morocco, held in Manhasset on March 12-13, 2012, wrapped without major progress, despite the agreement to continue the negotiations June and July. (SPS)
