Melbourne, March 20, 2012 (SPS) - The Castan Centre for Human Rights Law at Monash University (Australia) hosted on Monday a talk under the theme "Non-violent resistance in the Middle East": Dr. Stephen Zunes who is a Professor of Politics and International Studies at the University of San Francisco.
Professor Zunes examined the power of strategic nonviolent action-which has previously brought down autocratic regimes from the Philippines to Poland and from Chile to Serbia-has made its mark on the Middle East during the past sixteen months, challenging the legitimacy of both pro-Western and anti-Western regimes as well as military occupations in the West Bank and Western Sahara.
In his speech Professor Zunes spoke about Western Sahara. He talked about the Gdeim Izik which was violently dismantled by the Moroccan occupation forces, mentioning the theft of natural resources of Western Sahara by the Moroccan regime.
It's worth mentioning that Castan Centre organised an event last year about Western Sahara under the title: Western Sahara: Living Dangerously Under Moroccan Occupation, in which participated Aicha Dahane, International Officer of the Forum for the Future for Saharawi Women and Dr Benjamin MacQueen, Deputy Director of the Global Terrorism Research Centre at Monash University.
Professor Stephen Zunes , who chairs the program in Middle Eastern Studies in San Francisco University, is also the co-author with Jacob Mundy of a recent book on Western Sahara: Western Sahara: War, Nationalism and Conflict Irresolution. (SPS)
