Situation of the Saharawi hunger strikers in Black jail extremely alarming (human rights organization

Shaheed Al Hafed (refugee camps), March 25, 2012 (SPS) - The Saharawi Union of Jurists (UJS) has expressed deep concern on the serious condition of health of the Saharawi political prisoners incarcerated in the Moroccan Black jail, who are holding a hunger strike for the twenty-fourth consecutive day, underlying that their situation “extremely alarming,” according to a statement issued Sunday.

According to their families, health of the prisoners becomes “more deteriorated and dangerous” due to the consequences of the open hunger strike and the practices by the Prison administration that are contrary to the relevant international conventions, the statement underlined.

The statement pointed out that the following Saharawi hunger strikes: Awlad Sheikh Mahjub, Atigu Baray, Hasana Wali, Sharif Nasari and Aziz Baray suffer from continued fainting, pains at level of their limbs and heads, disability to speak, vomiting blood, pressure and difficulty in breathing.

UJC strongly denounced position of the Moroccan authorities towards the just and legitimate demands of the Saharawi hunger strikers, as well as Morocco’s intransigence and shameful disregard to lives of the Saharawi hunger strikers.
It also held Moroccan state full responsibility for safety of the Saharawi political prisoners in Black Jail, appealing to conciseness owners to the immediate action to save their lives and pressurize Moroccan state to respond to their legitimate demands.

“Saharawi Jurists Union voices its absolute solidarity with the Saharawi prisoners on hunger striker and with their families, which suffer from outrageous practices contrary to all international norms and conventions, and with all the Saharawi defenders and activists of human rights as well as all the Saharawi political prisoners in the terrible jails of Morocco, especially those incarcerated in Black prison in the occupied city of El Aaiun…,” asserted the statement.

The Union appealed to justice and equality lovers in the world, media and individuals to exert pressure on Morocco to immediately intervene to save lives of all the Saharawis on hunger strike and responding to their legitimate demands.

The group has been arrested on September 25-27, 2011 after their participation in peaceful demonstrations took place in the occupied city of Dakhla. (SPS)
